FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY / PROFESSIONAL PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY
The beauty of photography is the opportunity to explore the simplicities and complexities of a variety of subjects and interpret them through various photo techniques and styles. But the look and feel of the final photo really relies on the mood and emotion of the subject, and my own feelings. When I’m passionate about something, I use photography as a vehicle (an excuse) to explore it intimately, spend time with it, “get to know it.” It's a loner's game and undeniably selfish in a way. Like most avocations. But hopefully, in a good way.
My subjects generally run in themes or groupings—Architecture; Industrial parts and machines; Transportation; Classic Cars; Route 66; Landscape, Photo Stories; Polaroids hand manipulated in painterly fashion, evoking impressionism. Other times, it's a one-off, spur of the moment opportunity. Que sera sera.
The challenge (and fun) of portrait photography is tapping into the person's personality, drawing out a character trait that translates visually. As a portrait editorial and magazine photographer, I like to photograph subjects in their environment, as I typically do when shooting for magazines. It's a great storytelling device and personalizes the subject, getting a glimpse into their world.
